C3.  THE TABERNACLE AS A TYPE OF THE CHURCH

Rev 8:4 – And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel's hand. 

uKEY VERSEu Heb 9:8-12  the Holy Spirit indicating this, that the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing. It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience —  concerned only with foods and drinks, various washings, and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation.  But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.  Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

The burning Bush was not consumed by the fire

The church is resilient and indestructible it withstands fiery persecution and trials throughout history

Exo 3:2 –   And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. 

Mat 16:18 –  And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.___________________________

The church is holy ground. It is not the building, but the community of people who make up the church

Exo 3:5 –   Then He said, "Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground." 

1Co 3:17 –  If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are._________________________________________

Eph 1:4 – just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love_________________________________

Heaven is costly and beautiful.

1Ki 6:21–22 – So Solomon overlaid the inside of the temple with pure gold. He stretched gold chains across the front of the inner sanctuary, and overlaid it with gold. The whole temple he overlaid with gold, until he had finished all the temple; also he overlaid with gold the entire altar that was by the inner sanctuary.

The temple was where the manifest presence of God dwelled among his people

Heaven is the ultimate dwelling place of God, where his full glory is revealed and his people will be in his presence

1Ki 8:10–11 – And it came to pass, when the priests came out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not continue ministering because of the cloud; for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.

Rev 21:3 –  And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.

The innermost part of the temple, the Holy of Holies, was a place of utmost holiness, where only the high priest could enter once a year

Heaven is a place of perfect holiness where no sin or impurity can enter

Lev 16:2–34 – the Lord said to Moses: "Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat. 

Rev 21:27 –  But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

The temple was the central place of worship, praise, and sacrifice for the Israelites

Heaven is described as a place of unceasing worship, praise, and adoration of God

1Ch 23:30 – to stand every morning to thank and praise the Lord, and likewise at evening; 

Rev 4:8b-11 –  And they do not rest day or night, saying: "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!" Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: "You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created."

The sacrificial system of the temple provided a means for the people to approach God and seek atonement for their sin

True access to God’s heavenly presence is made possible through the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ

Lev 17:11 – For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.' 

Heb 9:11–12, 24 –  But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. … For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;

The lamp in the temple was kept constantly lit,

symbolizing God’s light

God’s glory provides the constant light in heaven

Exo 27:20 – And you shall command the children of Israel that they bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to cause the lamp to burn continually.

Rev 21:23 – The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.

Egypt -  represents a state of bondage such as holds the sinner prior to his conversion

Gal 4:2 – Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world.                      

Rom 6:17 – But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.

Babylon - held God’s people captive in the Old Testament, pictures the condition of an apostate church that 

                  has departed from the simplicity of the New Testament pattern

Rev 14:8 –  And another angel followed, saying, "Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication."                                                                         

Rev 16:19 – Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath.                 

Rev 17:5 – And on her forehead a name was written: Mystery, Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and of the abominations of the earth.                                                                                                                                 

Rev 18:2 – And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, "Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird!

Canaan as a type of Heaven

Ø  A leader was needed to get to both places (Joshua / Jesus)

Ø  Both places are reached after wandering in the wilderness (desert / sin)

Ø  Both are places of hope for God’s children

Ø  Both are reached when one crosses the stormy waters of Jordan (literal / figurative)

Ø  Both are lands that flow with milk and honey (literal / figurative)

Ø  Both represent rest for God’s people (temporal / eternal)

Heb 3:1 – Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus

Rev 17:14 – These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful."
